The Coming Epiphany

The French Laundry Cookbook
Thomas Keller, chef/proprietor of the French Laundry--the most exciting place to eat in the United States, writes Ruth Reichl in the New York Times--is a wizard, a purist, a man obsessed with getting it right. His flavors have clarity and intensity. His methods dazzle. Every mouthful is an explosion of taste.
This cookbook, Keller's first, is as satisfying as a French Laundry meal, a series of small, highly refined, intensely focused courses. 150 recipes an more than 200 photographs Keller's wit and whimsy find expression in unique recipes (and titles) such as lobster-filled crepes with a carrot emulsion sauce, topped with a pea shoot salad dressed lightly with lemon-infused oil (Peas and Carrots), or sauteed monkfish tail with braised ox tails, salsify, and crepes (Surf and Turf).
This is a book to cook from, to learn from, to savor.
Thomas Keller is chef and owner of the French Laundry and the more casual Bouchon in Yountville, California. He was the chef of La Reserve, Raphael, and Rakel in New York before moving to California.

This review is written from memory as I came here seeking to buy another copy. I liked it enough to buy it twice. My recommendation that you buy it once is happily tendered.

Make Your Own Electric Guitar
Melvyn Hiscock has a unique gift not only in building electric guitars but also in his writing. From the very first pages the old mysticisms surrounding electric guitars are dispelled. Leo Fender kept thing simple and how many of his fuitars are sold today? Melvyn's approach is the same by keeping each step simple. The book is packed with excellent photographs and diagrams and his section on electrics is brilliant, no schematics just again simple step by step instructions. Anyone who buys this book will without doubt, in a versy short space of time build and play their own guitar, and if they are anything like me get bitten by the building bug. Thank you Melvyn Hiscock.

How to Do Everything iPod, iPhone & iTunes
This book succeeds in being a beginner's guide because it's easy to understand and covers areas where a beginner usually stumbles, from understanding the iPod or iPhone's controls to using iTunes to organize one's music. You'll find plenty of screenshots to help you along, and both PC and Mac versions of iTunes are covered. The index is pretty good, making the book a good basic reference on various topics related to the iPod, iPhone, iTunes empire.
So, if you need a book to help you get to the many features of iPod or iPhone and iTunes, this book is your best bet. But if you want in-depth coverage of these products, you'll have to look elsewhere or wait, as I have not found a single book that covers the many advanced features (e.g., real interaction between sound check and volume adjustment and EQ) and many bugs and annoyances of the iPod and iTunes.

This Book Is Not Good For You
At the center of this third book in the Secret series is the Tuning Fork and its mystery. Cass, Max-Ernest, and Yo-Yogi find themselves involved in a great “chocolate” mystery. Sinister Senor Hugo, great experimenter of chocolate, and the infamous Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais hold Cass’ mom as hostage as they seek the secret of immortality. Bosch again intersperses the story with warnings for readers and gives footnote explanations about types of chocolate. Ford’s hauntingly humorous illustrations provide brief intermissions in the story. Although there is no secret code to unravel, fans of the first two books will find this sequel satisfying

The Rembrandt Affair
Two families, one terrible secret, and a painting to die for ...
Determined to sever his ties with the Office, Gabriel Allon has retreated to the windswept cliffs of Cornwall with his beautiful Venetian-born wife Chiara. But once again his seclusion is interrupted by a visitor from his tangled past: the endearingly eccentric London art dealer, Julian Isherwood. As usual, Isherwood has a problem. And it is one only Gabriel can solve.
In the ancient English city of Glastonbury, an art restorer has been brutally murdered and a long-lost portrait by Rembrandt mysteriously stolen. Despite his reluctance, Gabriel is persuaded to use his unique skills to search for the painting and those responsible for the crime. But as he painstakingly follows a trail of clues leading from Amsterdam to Buenos Aires and, finally, to a villa on the graceful shores of Lake Geneva, Gabriel discovers there are deadly secrets connected to the painting. And evil men behind them.
Before he is done, Gabriel will once again be drawn into a world he thought he had left behind forever, and will come face to face with a remarkable cast of characters: a glamorous London journalist who is determined to undo the worst mistake of her career, an elusive master art thief who is burdened by a conscience, and a powerful Swiss billionaire who is known for his good deeds but may just be behind one of the greatest threats facing the world.

The Red Pyramids
If your kids are fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, they'll be delighted to know that The Red Pyramid, the first book in his new series, The Kane Chronicles, has been released and is now available at bookstores across the country. According to the Disney Book Group's media advisory email,
"The Kane Chronicles [is] a new fantasy bringing ancient Egyptian mythology to life in a vivid, modern-day setting. In the debut novel of the series, The Red Pyramid, siblings Carter and Sadie Kane discover that they are descendants of great Egyptian magicians and the only ones who can set events right when a magical accident unleashes Egyptian gods into the modern world."

The Left Bank Gang
Using only a few pages, Jason manages to craft two different stories that happen to star the same characters. The characters are F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and other literary giants as they live their legendary bohemian lifestyles in Paris. Except in this story they aren't writers but cartoonists, with comics being the height of culture in this alternate world. Not only are these writers now comic book creators, they are distinctly comic book characters as Jason has transformed them into his trademark anthropomorphic dogs and birds. As these characters contemplate their lives, Fitzgerald in particular is down and out. The book is a comment on the literary acceptance comics have been getting in recent years. All the anxieties these creators have to deal with are just as relevant to writers and cartoonists now as they were for the Lost Generation. Then, in a rather abrupt twist only Hemingway could be responsible for, the group decides to rob a bank, turning into a Tarantinoesque caper complete with different perspectives on the same chaotic event. Jason's clean, comfortable art and droll storytelling keep everything together through all the stylistic flights of fancy.

Low Moon
I've awaited this book for months now and my expectations for it couldn't have been much higher, but it still managed to exceed them. There are actually 5 separate stories contained in this book: "Emily Says Hello", "Low Moon", "&", "Proto Film Noir", and "You are Here" which are all very different in their subject matter and style of storytelling. This makes for a really enjoyable read, because of the variation herein. I was glad to see that this book went less with the slapsticky style of the recent "The Last Musketeer" and went back to a more serious and kind of surreal tone that were seen in "Hey, Wait" and "The Iron Wagon". Don't get me wrong though, Jason's humor still comes through in the surreality of the stories.
Its awesome to see Jason getting his works published in hardcover too, as I feel his comics are deserving of the respect. All in all, this was really enjoyable for me and I would recommend this to both established fans of Jason and people who are looking to see what he's all about.

Forbidden Flowers
Forbidden Flowers is Nancy Friday's second collection of sexual fantasies -- and it's even more explicit and outspoken than her original erotic masterpiece, My Secret Garden. With ForbiddenFlowers , these women can yet again experience the exhilarating freedom that comes with the awareness and acceptance of their sexual selves.

Overclocked: Stories of the Future Present
An unabashed promulgator of the Internet and its democratic potential, Doctorow (Eastern Standard Tribe) explores the benefits and consequences of online systems in this provocative collection of six mostly long stories. "When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth" is a moving chronicle of a widely dispersed network of techno-geeks laboring to keep the World Wide Web running as an epitaph to an earth devastated by a bioweapon apocalypse. In "After the Siege"—the bleak chronicle of a modern siege of Stalingrad—the horrors of war become fodder for a documentary film crew's reality-based entertainment. Two tales riff on classic SF themes: "I, Robot," in which Isaac Asimov's positronic bots are cogs in a dysfunctional future totalitarian state, and "Anda's Game," a brilliant homage to Orson Scott Card's Ender's saga, in which a role-playing enthusiast finds herself immersed in a surprisingly real world of class warfare fought online by avatars of game players. Most "meat"-minded readers will find much to savor.

For the Win
A game about workers who toil in virtual sweatshops, "gold farming" wealth in video games for sale to rich western players. They form a trade union called the Industrial Workers of the World Wide Web, using the games to organize under their bosses' noses. It's an action-adventure story about games, economics and labor politics.

Great Old Fashioned American Desserts
"Great Old Fashioned American Desserts" offers a diversity of desserts that span the various periods and regions of American cooking. Some dishes are accompanied by chatty notes, explaining, for example, that waffles were introduced by the Dutch in the 1800s. But these are mere embellishments, and the business side of this book is the generous assortment of enticing, lucid recipes meant to be used by modern-day bakers. Creole sweet-potato and old Arkansas vinegar pies are examples of "America's favorite dessert." The chocolate Kentucky bourbon-pecan cake and "Lazy-Daisy" cake (first baked, then topped with a brown sugar-and-butter topping) are among the more unusual cake contributions.
